History of El Gordo

The Spanish Lottery organisers, Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, were established by Royal Decree in 1985 to operate national lotteries in Spain. El Gordo de la Primitiva, or simply known as El Gordo, is one of the lotteries on offer and was first launched in 1993.

This lottery was only held once a month, but in October 1997 the draw was changed to weekly. There have not been many changes to El Gordo, other than an additional 9th prize tier being added in 2005.

El Gordo de la Primitiva has a minimum starting jackpot of 5 million and will roll over until it’s won. The jackpot for this Spanish National Lottery has climbed to over 30 million in the past! Please note that from 2013 a government tax of 20% is levelled on all lottery winnings over €2,500.00.
