A story of riches to rags.
For a single day the world stood still and watched as Meghan Markle transformed into a real-life Cinderella and married her prince. From Windsor Castle to silver-plated trumpets and a Givenchy gown, the Royal Wedding took the world’s breathe away. We can all agree that Meghan Markle won the husband lottery with her young prince, but did you know that her dad once won the lottery?
Here’s what the world already knows about the new Duchess of Sussex:
Meghan is the first American to marry into the British royal family.
She’s now the first person to hold the title of Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan’s engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry and includes a large diamond from Botswana and two smaller diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection.
Markle was once a briefcase girl on Deal or No Deal!
Hollywood careers run in the family
Meghan Markle isn’t the only family member familiar with the Hollywood lifestyle. Her dad, Tom Markle was once a successful Hollywood lighting designer and worked as a lighting director for many years on the classic tv series General Hospital. It was on-set that Tom met Doria Ragland who was a makeup artist in training at the time. She later became his wife and Meghan Markle was born.
Riches to rags
The book, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, details the actress’s life and childhood with a special excerpt dedicated to her father, Tom Markle. This chapter details how Markle’s father won the lottery when she was a child and unfortunately lost it all again.
Tom Markle’s love for playing the lottery was well known, and his enthusiasm for the game is clear when you look at the thousands of dollars that were spent on trying his luck on winning big.
In 1990, Tom Markle’s love for the game made him a lottery winner and his playing habits paid out - literally. Mr. Markle walked away with $750,000 from the California State Lottery by matching 5 numbers, which included Meghan’s birth date! For those feeling lucky and inspired, Meghan was born on August 4th, 1981!
If Markle invested his winnings, it would be worth about around $1.5 million in 2018. Sadly for Mr. Markle, he later declared bankruptcy.
What happened to the winnings?
According to Meghan’s half-brother, Tom Jr, their dad lost a large portion of his lottery prize to a friend who convinced him to invest his winnings into a jewellery business. Needless to say, this store wasn’t worth its weight in gold.
But Mr. Markle didn’t lose all his money to that jewelry scam and had some left to help his family. Tom Jr received enough money to start a flower store, his daughter received a car and Meghan’s tuition for a Catholic school was paid up in full.
In 2016, Tom Sr declared bankruptcy of over $30,000 and with little saved away, he now finds himself in a tough financial spot.
While Tom hit the jackpot years ago, it seems that fortune now smiles on Meghan and her new royal life. Want to know how to become a millionaire? Check out our lottery tips that make a millionaire here!
