Derek Banks, the managing director of European Waterways, said that they’ve experienced a drastic increase in solo travellers. The popular international river cruising company has quickly adapted to this new travel trend and has done their best to accommodate everyone. They now offer cabins exclusively for solo travellers and they’ve waived the penalty fee associated with booking a trip for one. The standard “per person sharing” rate, which is very common in the travel industry, is now slowly making way for new booking options.

Trafalgar and Insight Vacations have also reported an increase in their number of solo vacation bookings. They have also waived the standard penalty fee, plus, they’ve gone as far as creating their very own booking method - the single sharing option. Here, a traveller on a solo vacation can opt to share a room with another solo traveller. Travelling is changing, and clearly, so is the industry.

  • This is the perfect time to tick off everything on your bucket list: maybe your friends consider your travel style “too wild” or “too slow”. On a solo vacation, anything goes and nothing is off-limits. Throw tomatoes at La Tomatina in Spain, go heli-skiing in Alaska or enjoy a 5-star luxury travel trip, this is your chance to experience it all.
  • You don’t have to wait for anyone: do you prefer late nights over early mornings? Breakfast over brunch? Tapas over a 3-course meal? When you’re enjoying a solo vacation you can act on a whim. On this trip, the only person that matters is you and what you’d like to experience in the moment - no waiting, just enjoying.
  • A solo vacation gives you time to think: winning the lottery can sometimes be extremely overwhelming. Between the excitement of becoming a multimillionaire and all the financial decisions that need to be made - sometimes you just need some me-time. A solo vacation is the perfect way to take time out, unwind and clear your head. What better way to think about your future than sipping cocktails while tanning on a tropical beach?
  • No one will know who you are: on a solo vacation you won’t be “the new US Powerball” lottery winner. Yes, you’ll have millions in the bank, but to everyone around you, you’re simply a traveller enjoying some iconic sights and having a good time.

What’s the first thing you’ll do after winning the lottery? Is a solo vacation now on your radar?
