The idea of spending just a few bucks for a chance to win an absolutely life-changing amount of cash is what makes the lottery so attractive. If the amount on offer is hundreds of millions, then even better.
Here are some of the biggest lotteries and their biggest jackpots historically:
Powerball is a US lottery available in 44 states and also played online by people around the world. Founded in 1992, it currently offers a $40 million minimum jackpot.
Powerball gives winners a choice between a cash amount and an annuity, the latter of which offers more money, but is paid out over thirty annual payouts. Most players choose the cash amount to get the money as soon as possible.
In January 2016, Powerball was the first lottery to reach a jackpot of over $1 billion. The lottery jackpot eventually reached $1.6 billion and was then claimed by three ticket holders, each of whom received $327 million after taxes from choosing the cash amount.

The list of the biggest lottery jackpots has been dominated by Powerball for a few years, with this USA-based game being first, second and third.
Mega Millions set a record for the largest single lottery payout ever. The jackpot reached $1.537 billion, a fraction less than the Powerball jackpot mentioned above; however, there was only one ticket holder and the $877 million they won immediately destroyed several lottery records, including the highest payout and cash value- all at once.
Mega Millions started in 1996. At the time, it was known as The Big Game and reached higher jackpot amounts than Powerball. But, Powerball has surpassed Mega Millions over the past few years, delivering more significant average wins as well as bigger jackpot wins.
EuroMillions is the most famous lottery in Europe. It is officially available in nine European countries, with the biggest fans in the UK, France and Spain. It is also available on online lottery portals outside of Europe.
EuroMillions launched in February 2004, with its first draw in Paris. EuroMillions is currently the third-largest lottery in the world.
The jackpot has surpassed the €100 million multiple times in the past, and it has a minimum jackpot of €17 million, which is certainly not a low amount by anyones standards. There is also a maximum jackpot of €190 million, which still gives players plenty to get excited about.
EuroMillions has reached the maximum on several occasions (the first of which took place in 2012). The biggest winners so far have come from Great Britain, with one a winner of €190 million and one of €185 million. There have also been large winners from Spain, Ireland, Portugal and Switzerland.
EuroJackpot is the second-largest lottery in Europe and was created as an alternative to EuroMillions. It has a minimum jackpot of €10 million and a maximum jackpot of €90 million.
EuroJackpot started in 2012, and though it has only been around a short time, there have already been several big wins. A total of six maximum jackpots have already been won, as well as several other jackpots that were very close.
